Clinical Studies on Bronchiectasis

Abstract
From June 1989 to June 1974, it was investigated clinical data and findings of 88 hospitalized patients confirmed as bronchiectasis with no AFB in sputum at Seoul National University Hospital.
The results were briefly summarized as follows:
1. The disease was most common in third decade.
2.The duration of illness was almost within 10 years, but within 5 years in two third of cases.
3. Chronic cough and purulent sputum were main symptoms and hemoptysis was complained in half of cases, but occasional, patients complained of only hemoptysis.
4. Moist rales over the affected area of the lung were heard in half of cases, but no physical finding was found in 37.5% of cases.
5. In most of cases, normal flora, alpha-hemolytic Streptococci, D. penumoniae or H. influenzae was isolated on the culture of sputum.
6. A simple chest P-A film revealed a various findings suggestive bronchiectasis in most of cases, but normal in 15.9% of cases.
7. The extent of the disease was usually confined to 1 or 2 lobes and involved the left lung more often than the right. The involvement was usually the left lower lobe, the lingular segment and the right lower lobe in that order.
8. The surgical indication was present in 82% of cases and the majority underwent lobectomy. Especially many cases underwent both left lower lobectomy and lingular segmentomy.
9. Tuberculosis was associated in 13.5% in pathologic diagnosis.
